Our body naturally produces a protein called lamin A. This protein acts as an essential structural support for our cell nuclei, ensuring their proper function and the protection of our DNA.
However, starting at the age of 24, our skin cells begin to synthesize an altered version of it, called progerin. This protein accumulates within the cell nuclei, hindering their function and renewal. This disruption at the cellular level ultimately degrades the tissues and marks the starting point of cellular aging.
Thus, progerin establishes itself as a true marker of aging, being involved in 13 of the 14 mechanisms of cellular aging (Kroemer et al. 2025. From geroscience to precision geromedicine: Understanding and managing aging. Cell. 188:2043–2062.).
